Vallejo Hobby Spray Primer — Grey 400 ml (Matte, Self-Leveling)
Product description
The Hobby Paint Spray line blends a primer base with intense pigment, engineered for use on metal, plastic and resin models and miniatures. Each 400 ml (13.52 fl.oz.) aerosol delivers a matt, self-leveling coat that dries rapidly and is formulated to showcase even the smallest sculpted details.
Every can is supplied with two interchangeable nozzles: a low-output tip intended for careful, precise work on small parts and a medium-output tip designed for covering medium to large surfaces more quickly. The package contains the 400 ml aerosol and both cap options for immediate use.
The can's top ring is color-coded to show the actual spray shade. These aerosols are color-coordinated with the brand’s Game and Model Color ranges so you can prime with a matching tone and continue with the same color family using brushes or an airbrush.
Usage notes: apply in multiple thin passes from the recommended distance, allow rapid drying between coats to avoid runs and preserve detail. Suitable for standard miniature workflows including zenithal highlighting and layered painting. During a rebranding transition you may receive either the newer or older packaging.
Pros
- Fast-drying, matt self-leveling finish
- Two nozzles for fine and broad spraying
- Good adhesion on metal, plastic and resin
Cons
- Cans can feel empty quickly
- Some users report defective spray valves
- Higher cost than basic primers
VerdictA dependable primer for hobbyists who need a smooth, detail-friendly base. The formula lays down thin, fast-drying coats that maintain sculpted detail and accepts subsequent paint well. Two interchangeable nozzles let you switch between fine-detail and broader coverage without an airbrush. Occasional quality-control issues are reported, but most users praise the finish, adhesion and compatibility

My go-to primer for wargaming minis
I use these primers on metal and plastic miniatures. They lay smoother than Krylon or Army Painter and are usually cheaper than Citadel. They dry fast so you can build up thin layers. Coverage is a bit lighter than some alternatives, which I prefer for multiple thin coats. Color selection is excellent, though cans seem to run out quickly.

Smoother spray than other brands
I've tried most major rattle-can primers and this gives the smoothest, most even coat I’ve seen. Highly recommended over other options.

A dependable standard
Good color and adhesion. Not the cheapest option, but consistent results if you keep a proper spraying distance — the finish stays even across the model.

Faulty can — did not spray correctly
This can failed to spray properly, spurted paint around the nozzle and made a big mess outdoors. Tried both included caps but couldn’t get a normal spray. Ended up discarding the can after it coated everything around the work area.

Excellent for resin prints — great coverage
On my second can. I use it to prime resin-printed head sculpts and it bonds well, goes on smoothly and creates a solid base for paint. I usually prefer black for depth, switching to grey or white for lighter palettes. Pricey, but performance keeps me buying more.

Fast-drying, durable primer
Dries very quickly with no extra texture and applies well even in cool conditions. Leaves a durable layer that resists rub-off, though it is a bit expensive. Pure white covers well even in thin passes.

Performs like the airbrush version
As a miniature and display painter I preferred Vallejo black in my airbrush, so the rattle can was a welcome alternative. It saved me airbrush cleaning and covered larger prints quickly while still working fine on smaller busts. I liked it so much I already need another can and bought the white for zenithal highlights.

A spray can that delivers
As a modeler I’ve tried many primers and this one impressed me. The spray is easy to control, the nozzle gives precise application on small parts and it bonds well to plastic and metal. It dries fast and provides a reliable base for paint — ideal for aircraft models and other detailed builds.

Does the job
Performs well and does exactly what’s expected. As with any spray, use in a well-ventilated area.

Good value and versatility
Bought this on recommendation for a PLA 3D print; no adhesion or melting issues. The generous volume and two nozzles let you choose between fine work or filling large areas, saving time or adding finesse. Make several light passes for the best result and to avoid runs.
