Vallejo Acrylic Chipping Medium — 17 ml Bottle for Weathering
Product description
Vallejo Chipping Medium is supplied in a 17 ml plastic bottle with a flip-top cap for controlled dispensing. The product is an acrylic-based medium formulated specifically for creating chipped and worn paint effects on scale models and miniatures.
Its formulation gives the same kind of surface tension behavior as conventional solvent washes, allowing you to soften transitions between paint layers and produce natural-looking breaks in topcoats. Apply it between an undercoat and a topcoat, then remove or agitate the top layer once dry to reveal realistic chips.
Intended for hobbyists and model painters, it works with Vallejo acrylic paints and other water-based systems. A light brush application and careful mechanical removal (water, soft tools, or abrasion) yield controlled weathering without aggressive solvents.
Vallejo began in 1965 in New Jersey, originally producing paints for animation. The company expanded in the 1990s into the model and hobby market and now offers a broad range of products for modelers, including Model Color, Model Air, Game Color, Panzer Aces, pigments, texture pastes, varnishes and a variety of mediums.
Pros
- Produces realistic chipped finishes
- Easy to apply and control
- Small flip-top bottle for precise use
Cons
- Requires practice to avoid over-scratching
- Small volume for large projects
- Works best when sealed with varnish afterward
VerdictAn effective tool for realistic weathering and paint chipping on models and miniatures. It applies smoothly and produces convincing flakes once you learn the technique, but it takes some practice to avoid cutting through to bare plastic. Best used with a sealer and complementary rust/weathering paints for convincing results.

Transforms weathering work
This medium makes realistic rust and wear much simpler. Once applied and topcoated, you can lift areas to reveal believable chips. Be cautious with tools like toothpicks—it's easy to gouge through to bare plastic. If that happens, a quick repaint of the undercoat hides most mistakes.

Great finish once mastered
Quality is high, though it takes a little practice at first. The chipped paint looks very realistic. After weathering, seal the model with varnish to protect the effect from moisture.

Class demo vs home use
I watched a workshop and the results were amazing, but at home I couldn't reproduce the same effect even after proper drying. Technique matters a lot.
