20-Quart Coarse Horticultural Perlite for Soil Aeration & Drainage
Product description
Package contents: one resealable heavy-duty pouch containing 20 quarts of coarse perlite. The granules are uniformly sized for consistent mixing and can be used as a top dressing for succulents or blended into potting mixes for container plants.
Material and origin: Horticultural perlite is a lightweight volcanic glass formed when lava interacts with seawater and expands. The product is pH neutral, long-lasting, and resists breakdown, so it helps maintain a loose, friable growing medium over time.
Performance: These coarse particles can retain moisture — up to roughly four times their own weight — while remaining porous. That porosity reduces soil compaction, boosts aeration, and allows excess water to drain away, supporting root expansion and healthier plant growth.
Applications: Suitable for a wide range of uses including herb gardening, cactus and succulent mixes, Venus fly trap and carnivorous plant soils, orchids, perennials, tropicals, and other exotic houseplants. Also appropriate for hydroponic or soilless setups and as a decorative or functional element in flower arrangements and miniature landscapes.
Storage and handling: The product comes in a sturdy resealable pouch designed for long-term storage. The pouch blocks light, helps keep the perlite dry, and lets you pour out only what you need while saving the remainder for future use.
Pros
- Uniform coarse granules improve drainage and aeration
- Lightweight, pH-neutral volcanic material
- Resealable heavy-duty pouch for easy storage
Cons
- Some bags may have a bit of dust toward the bottom
- Large 20-quart volume may be more than casual gardeners need
- Not a nutrient source—used solely as a soil amendment
VerdictReliable coarse perlite that genuinely improves soil structure and drainage. Well-sized particles, low dust in most bags, and reusable resealable packaging make it a practical choice for indoor gardeners and hobbyists seeking better aeration and healthier roots.

Don't skip perlite
Perlite provides essential aeration. Add it to mixes along with charcoal or orchid bark for many plant types. This brand works well and is airy as expected.

Smaller bag than I thought
Got this because everyone recommended it. Confident my plants will benefit, but the bag felt smaller than I expected.
