22oz Forged Rock Pick with Pointed Tip and Shock-Reduction Grip
Product description
Top choice for geologists, paleontologists, rockhounds and prospectors worldwide, this rock pick is made to endure extended field use.
This model is a 22-ounce pick with a long handle, featuring a squared striking face on one side and a pointed pick on the other for prying, splitting and driving chisels. The head and shaft are forged from a single piece of solid American steel for maximum strength and to eliminate weak joints. The tool is finished with a blue molded Shock Reduction Grip that is bonded directly to the steel core, reducing impact vibration by approximately 70% and providing a non-slip surface in all weather conditions.
Intended uses include breaking open rocks, extracting mineral specimens and fossils, driving chisels, and general prospecting and field geology tasks. The grip is designed to stay in place even when wet, muddy or under heavy impact. Proudly manufactured in Rockford, Illinois, using U.S. steel and traditional forging methods that produce a durable, long-lived striking tool.
Pros
- Single-piece forged steel for exceptional durability
- Molded shock-reduction grip minimizes vibration and slippage
- Versatile square face and pointed pick for multiple tasks
Cons
- Heavier weight may be tiring for extended carry
- Long handle can add bulk when packing
- Grip color may show dirt over time
VerdictA heavy-duty, single-piece steel rock pick built for demanding fieldwork. The pointed pick and square face handle both cracking and chisel-driving tasks, while the molded shock-reduction grip cuts vibration and stays secure in wet or muddy conditions. If you want a tool that feels substantial, resists abuse, and will last for years, this 22 oz model is a dependable choice.

Excellent balance and precision
Fantastic tool — has enough heft to break rock but still offers precise control. Used with a matching chisel it split a large boulder without effort. Great for fieldwork.

Built like the classics — buy once
This pick feels seriously solid the moment you pick it up: well balanced, old-school construction and ready for heavy use. The molded grip is comfortable, absorbs shock and stays secure when wet or muddy. I debated a longer model for leverage but this length proved more than adequate. After repeated use, dirt, and exposure to moisture, it still looks and performs like new.

Pride of American craftsmanship
Feels like classic American workmanship — solid, well finished and dependable. I liked it so much I bought two. Grip is excellent and the tool looks and feels premium. Packaging was tight, but the pick itself is fantastic.

Dependable for fossil work
Excellent hammer for fossil hunting — has lasted through many trips and never failed. I chose the longer version for extra reach and help when standing, but it is heavier to carry. If you don’t need the extra power, consider the 14 oz instead.

Proven, robust quality
Not much to add: the hammer is rugged, very well made, sits nicely in the hand and does exactly what it should — break rock with convincing force. Owning a classic like this also has a bit of cachet for field geologists.

Trusted one-piece construction
I’ve always preferred one-piece Estwing tools. No loose heads or splintering handles to worry about. Grips are great, weight feels right and they take an edge well. I still use axes I bought decades ago; these are made to last. This pick arrived ready to use.
